History
Billinghay is in the Domesday Book written in 1087. The name Billinghay
means stream or island of the Billas people, and Billa would have
been their leader.
Billinghay
was a gravel island and must have been lonely and isolated place.
The Roman Car Dyke is to the east of the village and the river Skirth
to the south. The village is surrounded by fenlands which were mostly
flooded in winter.
